Police: Driver Speeds Off During Traffic Stop, Crashes Into 2 Cars

A man who was pulled over for running a red light sped off as the officer approached him and ended up crashing into two cars, police said.

Police said 39-year-old Martin Enriquez was stopped after passing the red light at the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Copia Street in South-Central El Paso. When the officer got out of his patrol car, police said, Enriquez drove east on Alameda. The officer chased the Chevrolet pickup and saw it turn onto Raynolds Street before crashing into a Nissan X-Terra and a Ford Taurus.

Police said the officer arrived moments later and performed a field sobriety test on Enriquez after checking on the other driver involved in the crash. The driver of the X-Terra, 24-year-old Cynthia Trevizo, was treated for a wrist injury, but there were no other injuries reported.

Enriquez, of the 12300 block of Tierra Alaska Avenue, was arrested on suspicion of a third DWI, a state felony, and evading arrest or detention with a motor vehicle. He was booked into the El Paso County Jail, with bond set at $8,000. Police said Enriquez was convicted of DWI in 1989 and in 2009.
