New Traffic Lights Going Up Near Busy Freeway Entrance/Exit

Those who live or work in El Paso’s West Side may have noticed new traffic signals going up pretty close to a busy freeway exit and entrance.

The signals are about halfway through the Resler exit, along a lengthy curve of roadway.

El Paso’s Department of Transportation said the lights will accommodate a new home development that is currently taking shape near the freeway.

The Texas Department of Transportation helped coordinate the project with the city. TxDOT traffic engineer Edgar Fino said that when they are up and running, the signals shouldn’t affect drivers who exit I-10 at Resler.

Fino said crews are building “bypass lanes” that will allow exiting traffic to keep flowing.

It’s a different story for vehicles entering I-10, though.

Fino said those vehicles will have to stop at the signals at the bottom of the hill.

Irene Berti, who has used the Resler exit and entrance for 10 years, told ABC-7 she thinks the lights are a bit much.

“I think it’s going to slow down traffic,” she said. “They should put a caution light there, a yellow light, but not a stop light.”

As for the cost of the lights, a city transportation spokeswoman said the developer is paying for the construction.

When asked about the number of homes to be built and a timeline for completion, developer Doug Schwartz said that the project is still in the planning process.
