Puppy Found Abandoned In Central El Paso Dumpster

Yadira Dominguez couldn’t believe what she saw in the trash behind her office: A small black and white puppy that was left to die in the Dumpster.

The discovery was made just after lunch Thursday on the 5100 block of Montana Avenue.

“It breaks my heart,” she told ABC-7. “How anybody could do something like this, it’s just absolutely horrible.”

Dominguez called the Animal Rescue League of El Paso.

Elsa Escobar was soon at the office and in the trash, pulling the puppy from the garbage bin herself.

The dog was nicknamed “Estrella,” after a nearby street.

“It’s not right,” Escobar told ABC-7. “You do not do this to these animals; you do not. If you’re not going to be responsible with an animal, then don’t have a pet.”

Animal cruelty is a crime with punishments that can range from a fine to prison time, according to the city of El Paso’s website.

Still, Escobar told ABC-7 that Estrella’s story isn’t unique.

“We’re finding them on the streets, Dumpsters, wherever,” she said. “Don’t be inhumane and do this to your pet. You don’t do this to your kids, and you don’t do this to your pets.”

Escobar said those who find themselves overwhelmed should ask family, neighbors or animal groups for help before abandoning any animal.

The puppy, which appeared to be OK aside from a little fur matting, was taken to the Animal Rescue League’s facility in Canutillo for further evaluation.
