TxDOT: I-10 Project Delayed Because Parts Have Not Arrived

The parts for a project to repair bridge decks on the Geronimo and Robert E. Lee overpasses on Interstate 10 have not arrived, and because temperatures are expected to fall in the near future, the project was postponed until further notice, a TxDOT official said.

The maintenance project, which included repairs to the associated approach slabs and the installation of armor joints and bridge joint seals, was set to begin Sunday.

Project engineer Tony Lujan said that the Texas Department of Transportation had to delay the project because the parts did not come in and by the time they do come in, the weather will be too cool. He said he needs the temperature to be 70 degrees or higher to install the metal armored joints that protect the concrete from traffic.

Lujan said the overpasses are safe and delaying the project won’t pose a danger.

This project, which would have shut down the freeway from Airway Boulevard to Geronimo Drive on Sundays through mid November, will likely start in March, Lujan said.

For weeks, several signs on the freeway have been announcing closures.

The complete closures will be required for work such as saw cutting, concrete removal and installation of new concrete and bridge armor joints.
