UTEP Student Sentenced In Child Pornography Case
A 26-year-old student was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to possessing thousands of images and more than 100 videos of child pornography, the U.S. attorney’s office announced Friday.
Luis Enriquez-Alonso, who is a student at the University of Texas at El Paso, admitted to using two individual Internet protocol (IP) addresses — one at home and the other at the university — to download child pornography.
On Feb. 18, investigators with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations and the Texas Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Investigations, executed a search warrant at Enriquez-Alonso’s residence and confiscated two laptop computers as well as other computer-related media. A forensics examination of the confiscated items revealed the presence of more than 5,400 images and 128 videos depicting child pornography.
On May 19, Enriquez-Alonso, a Mexican citizen residing in El Paso, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography.
According to a news release issued by the U.S. attorney’s office, U.S. District Judge Frank Montalvo also ordered Enriquez-Alonso to pay $150,000 restitution to be dispersed to the child victims in the pornography he possessed. Enriquez-Alonso tendered the restitution amount in court Friday. Enriquez-Alonso was also placed under supervised release for the remainder of his life after completing his prison term.
Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Brandy Gardes prosecuted this case on behalf of the government.
