Kitten Rescued From Underneath Storage Container
A 4-week-old kitten was rescued from underneath an 8,000 pound storage unit in a Walgreen’s parking lot in Las Cruces.
It was discovered by chance by a Walgreen’s customer who was picking up her meds medications at a drive-through on Walnut St. and Lohman Ave, when she heard whimpering from the Mobile-Mini container nearly 50 feet away.
The Walgreens manager said she called the Humane Society of Southern N.M., but without the proper equipment to move the crate, the Humane Society reached out to the Mobile Mini corporate office.
“I turned around and called the corporate office and they were up here a little after 7 (Saturday) morning,” said the President of the Humane Society of Southern N.M. Frank Bryce.
The regional manager for the Mobile Mini of El Paso, Peter Porras, said he had no choice but to respond.
“What would my daughter say if I would leave a little kitty underneath a container for something to happen to it?” asked Porras “So I said ‘We gotta go out there.'”
It only took 10 minutes to lift up the crate, but actually catching the frightened kitten took a little longer.
I stuck a little treat under (the container) and (the kitten) was following me until he came out,” said Porras.
There was no word Saturday night on how the kitten got stuck or how long it’d been trapped, but Bryce said it gobbled up a breakfast of chicken broth.
The kitten has been named “Mini” due to its small size and the Mobile Mini company that helped to rescue him.
“Mini isn’t bad,” said Bryce. “Unless we have to change it to Manny.” Mini’s gender remained a mystery, but Porras was sure, whether it’s a boy or girl, his daughter would be pleased.
“She’s gonna be proud of me. She’s a big animal lover. She’s got a couple dogs herself,” said Porras.
Bryce said he wants thank Walgreens and Mobile Mini for pulling together to save Mini, which may have found a new home with a Walgreen’s employee who says she plans on adopting it.
