Jerome Tilghman Throws Hat In For Congress

Retired Army major and teacher Jerome Tilghman announced he’s running for congress, and his priority is education.

“Our classrooms are now overcrowded. we have laid off teachers, laid off support personnel and, again, the labor force that you’re going to need in the future is in the classroom right now. That’s the last place we should be cutting,” Tilghman said during an interview.

Tilghman will be running against eight-term incumbent U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, and former city Rep. Beto O’rourke.

Tilghman was in the KVIA studios, where he also discussed the future of Fort Bliss. Talking about the danger that Congress will cut funding to Fort Bliss and leave us vulnerable, that’s why we should focus on a strong education base.

“We have got to make sure that business will come looking for us. If we have a solid, educated labor force, business will come looking where the talent pool is deep and we don’t want to rely on outside sources and outside influences that could be taken away from us by the stroke of a pen at the national level. We need to build that labor force right here,” Tilghman said.

He said that Congress’ dismal approval rate and the high unemployment rate was caused by legislators’ failure to reach consensus and compromise.

“You take a look at the inconsistencies from those policies and a Wall Street and a business community that says we cannot make a solid investment because we cannot predict what our national Legislature is going to do,” Tilghman said.
