NMSU Basketball Coach Marvin Menzies Completes Staff with Brown Addition
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Oct. 12)-New Mexico State men’s basketball head coach Marvin Menzies has hired Keith Brown as an assistant coach.
“I think we hit a home run with landing a coach with such experience and with such a great reputation in the basketball community,” Menzies said. “I’ve known Keith for quite some time, and he is one of the top coaches that I have been around, especially working with big guys but not just bigs. Having a head coaching resume in addition to his being so well-rounded will compliment our current staff and players as well. I think it was important to get someone in that would fit our current dynamics, and I think Keith will be the perfect fit in filling that void.”
Brown joined the Aggies after 14 seasons (1997-2011) at Cal State Bakersfield including six years as the head coach (2005-11). He helped the Roadrunners make the transition to NCAA Division I. Brown was promoted to head coach after serving as the head assistant coach for eight years (1997-2005).
He spent five years as the head coach at Colorado School of Mines (1992-97) in Golden, Colo., following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Washington (1990-92). Brown was an assistant coach at Lewis and Clark College (1989-90) and UC Davis (1986-89). He started his career at the high school level as head coach at Tokay High School in Lodi, Calif., (1984-86) and sophomore coach at St. Mary’s High School in Stockton, Calif., (1979-84).
Brown earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Pacific in 1978 and a master’s degree in education/curriculum and instruction from Chapman University in 1988.
The Aggies begin official practices for the 2011-12 season, Friday, Oct. 14.
