UPDATE: Tear Gas Ends SWAT Situation In East El Paso
A SWAT situation in east El Paso early Sunday came to an end after tear gas was fired into an apartment, according to El Paso Police Department spokesperson detective Mike Baranyay.
Police said a man and a woman were inside a home in the Fairway Apartments when police responded to a domestic violence call around 3 a.m.
A SWAT unit was then called to the apartment as it was unknown whether the woman was being held hostage. Police said they also had reason to believe the man was armed with a handgun.
Investigators said the woman came out of the apartment around 6:30 a.m.
Negotiators were unable to coax the man out, so the SWAT team fired tear gas into the apartment, according to police. The man came out of residence around 7 a.m. and was then taken into custody.
Investigators said the suspect was booked into the El Paso county jail on one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. His bond was set at $50,000.00
Military investigators were also spotted on the scene, but officials have not been able to say whether a member of the armed forces was involved.
