ABC-7 Exclusive: Student Speaks Out After School Parking Lot Assault

Joshua Woodley, a 19-year-old Andress high school student, still sports the white hospital bracelet he was issued after his brush with danger Friday morning.

“Yesterday I passed out, even though it happened on Friday, because of my concussion,” said Woodley outside the school.

Woodley’s referring to an incident that happened in an Andress parking lot. According to investigators, Woodley was assaulted as he was walking from his car to the school building by a man pretending to be a police officer.

“A man in an Impala asked me for my license,” said Woodley. “I’m like, ‘No, show me your ID if you’re a cop.’ He wasn’t wearing a uniform or anything.”

Woodley said the man refused to show him proof he was in fact an officer, so Woodley walked away. “As soon as I walked away, he hit me from behind in his car.”

Police identified the man as 24-year-old Daniel Jesse Munoz. Munoz bonded out of jail at 2 a.m. Monday and faces charges of impersonating a public servant, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and having a weapon where weapons are prohibited.

According to a complaint affidavit composed after Munoz’s arrest, investigators said Munoz hit Woodley so hard that the teenager rolled on top of the car’s hood and windshield.

“Afterward (Joshua) had the grill (of the car) implanted on his back, it was bad,” said one of Woodley’s friends who was in the parking lot when the attack allegedly happened.

Instead of staying down after he was hit, Woodley said he fought back. “As soon as I started getting up he got out of his car and I told him you better get back in your car or you’re going to regret it,” said Woodley. “But (Munoz) pushed me, so then I started hitting him and he said, ‘You just assaulted an officer.'”

According to the affidavit, Munoz took off after the scuffle. Real officers with the El Paso Independent School District’s Police Department caught up with Munoz moments later and arrested him. Officers said they found a bowie knife, a police radio and a siren during a search of Munoz’s car.

“I’m pressing charges. It hurt,” said Woodley.

ABC-7’s I-Team dug up the arrest record of a man with the same name and birthday as Daniel Munoz. According to the records, that man served probation in 2009 for a DWI arrest. A charge of theft between $50 and $500 was dismissed against him in 2008.
