Lavish Dedication at Spaceport America
British billionaire Richard Branson and New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez led a dedication today for Spaceport America, which will soon launch commercial flights into space.
Sir Richard Branson christened the spaceship terminal at Space Port America in Upham New Mexico on Monday. The name is as imaginative and ambitious as the the man himself, the hanger is now officially The Virgin Galactic Gateway to Space.
“It’s something literally out of this world, which is what they aim was,” said Branson. “I love to try to make dreams come true.”
But this dream comes with an unreal price tag. A seat on one of Branson’s flights will cost you anywhere from $150,000 to $250,000 — a cost some future space. A cost some future space travelers say is a small price to for a once in a lifetime experience. For those who have the cash to fly, its an opportunity to be part of history in the making.
“If the Wright brothers called and said, ‘Hey we wanna do this thing, do you wanna come check it out our garage, what were building?’ You’d wanna be a part of that,” Said future astronaut and Los Angeles alcohol company owner Carter Reum.
Virgin Galactic has already sold around $90 million worth of seats on their spacecraft. Branson and Governor Martinez agree, New Mexicans will reap the benefits.
“Once the construction phase is completed, Space Port and it’s tennant operations will support 550 permanent jobs,” said Governor Martinez.
“(The Space Port) will bring in thousands of astronauts who are going to go up in space from here. The restaurants, the hotels, everything else will be busy as a result … we’ve got to thank the people of New Mexico for actually voting to get this building built and it’s up to us to make sure none of them regret it,”said Branson. In just two years, the ships are expected to blast off from Spaceport America. A total of 460 private individuals are scheduled to ffly, with 150 of them signing on Monday.
