Police Identify Fort Bliss Soldier In SWAT Standoff
Police identified the Fort Bliss soldier involved in a standoff with SWAT officers early Sunday at the Lake Fairway Apartments in El Paso’s East Side.
Police responded to a family fight where they said Gabriel Chandler, 21, was locked inside the apartment with a woman and was armed with a handgun.
Fort Bliss spokesman Dieter Jester told ABC 7 that Chandler is a soldier stationed at Fort Bliss, where he is a member of the 1st Brigade Combat Team 1st Armored Division.
After several attempts were made to contact Chandler, SWAT and the Department’s Crisis Management Team were requested and responded. The woman walked out of the apartment before members of the SWAT team deployed tear gas into the apartment.
Moments later, Chandlers walked out and was taken into custody by SWAT officers.
Chandler, of the 11025 block of Vista Del Sol Drive, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and family violence.
