Bright Sky, Great Game Make Sun Bowl Memorable
The 78th annual Sun Bowl will be remembered for two things: a great football game and the best weather on game day in nearly 40 years.
Sun Bowl day started with perfect landings by all of the members of the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, who delivered the game ball.
“Two great teams, great crowd, beautiful day, you can’t beat this,” said Sun Bowl President Mike Rogers.
The Sun Bowl fell just short of a sellout for the third consecutive year, but by the end of the first quarter the stands looked almost completely full.
Despite falling short of 49,000 for the first time in a decade, the close game kept fans entertained, as did halftime act B.J. Thomas, who had everybody singing along.
Throw in the first overtime in game history and it was another big year for the sun bowl.
“These teams had a great time, they’ve got a lot of fans here, everybody had been very complimentary, they’re loving El Paso, which is what it’s all about,” said Rogers.
Utah won against Georgia Tech with a final score of 30-27 in overtime.
