UTEP Men’s Golf Team Starts Spring Season on High Note

EL PASO, TEXAS — The UTEP men’s golf team put together two solid rounds to finish sixth at its first tournament of the spring, the Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday in Tucson.

After scoring 303 over the first 18 holes, the Miners shot 287 and 292 for a two-day total of 882. Host Arizona was champion of the 12-team event (277-277-281-835).

The Miners registered their second-best score of the season behind the 878 they fired at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in Las Cruces in late October.

Jerry Castrellon tied for 17th place to pace UTEP, carding a two-over-par 215 (70-71-74). Martin Simonsen, making his Miner debut, tied for 22nd place (78-73-67-218).

Rounding out the Miners’ scoring were Ross Rotwein (tied for 31st place, 74-73-74-221), Devin Miertschin (tied for 35th place, 74-72-77-223) and Jere Pelletier (55th place, 82-71-76-229).

UTEP will next compete in the John Burns Intercollegiate Feb. 15-17 in Kahuku, Hawaii.
