Las Cruces Man Charged With Holding Mother Against Her Will Because She Wouldn’t Give Him Cigarettes

A 32-year-old man police suspect of holding his mother against her will because she refused to give him more cigarettes, is now in jail and charged with a fourth-degree felony.

Julian C. Gonzalez has been charged with one count of false imprisonment.

Las Cruces Police said that sometime Wednesday night, Gonzalez began asking his mother for more cigarettes. She refused to give him some which caused Gonzalez to become angry and belligerent, police said.

Police said that as Gonzalez’s mother sat on a sofa inside her home, Gonzalez stood over her and repeatedly forced her down each time she attempted to leave.

Sometime after 1 a.m. Thursday, Gonzalez went to his bedroom which allowed his mother to leave the residence and call for assistance. The woman was not physically injured.

Gonzalez was subsequently arrested and is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with bond set at $5,000.
