Volunteers Turn Downtown Alley Into Community Garden

Volunteers with the El Paso Permaculture group are making beautiful spaces out of unlikely places.

On Friday afternoon, members unveiled weeks’ worth of hard work in an alleyway between Santa Fe and El Paso streets downtown. They had turned a space covered in syringes and broken bottles into the beginnings of a community garden.

The group invested its own time and money into the garden, which members said will be tended by a family that lives nearby. Volunteers said they will teach the family how to harvest the blue corn, kale and other goods that were planted in there.
