Sun Metro Bus Accidents On The Rise In El Paso

By Robert Gray / El Paso Inc. Staff Writer

El Paso has received national recognition for having one of the safest bus systems in the country. But that?s changing, as more and more city buses are getting hit, or hitting other vehicles, and in some cases, people.

Each year since 2009, the number of accidents involving Sun Metro buses in El Paso has climbed, although the accident rate remains below the national average.

According to data compiled by Sun Metro for El Paso Inc., the frequency of bus accidents rose 42 percent from 2009 to 2001.

In 2009, there were 1.62 accidents per 100,000 miles driven. In 2011, that jumped to 2.3 accidents per 100,000 miles.
