City Council Approves $1.25 Million For Assessment Of Streetcar System

El Paso City Council voted six to two Tuesday to approve $1.25 million for an engineering and environmental assessment for a streetcar system.

The vote clears the way for $90 million in funding from the state to build the system.

The two mile trolley corridor will run along either Oregon or Stanton streets from the Downtown bridge to the Glory Road transit terminal near UTEP.

The study, to be done by U.R.S. Corporation out of Nevada, will begin almost immediately and is expected to be completed by September. An additional $3 million will be required from the City to finish the design but 95 percent of the project will be funded by the Texas Department of Transportation.
