New Voting System In Doa Ana County
When voters in Doa Ana County head to the polls for Tuesday’s primary elections, they’ll have the choice to pick a voting center for the first time ever.
The county is calling the new centers “Voter Convenience Centers.” Thirty-nine locations across the county will accept voters from all precincts.
County clerk Lynn Ellins told ABC-7 the new system will run faster and smoother utilizing an electronic system.
Voters will sign in on electronic signature pads and the correct ballot will print out automatically. Ellins said the system will basically eliminate provisional ballots — ballots cast by voters who went to the wrong precinct to vote.
In turn, Ellins said the system will speed up the process to reveal the final results since poll workers will not have to wait to tally up the provisional ballots.
The new system also saved the county more than $130,000 in poll workers’ salaries.
Ellins said the greatest benefit will go to the voters who no longer have to drive to a specific center to vote.
“If they’re driving past a location in the middle of the day, they can stop off and vote. They don’t have to worry about necessarily being at the polls at 7 in the morning so they can get to work and they’ve voted on time or have to run home before the polls close at 7,” Ellins said.
