Fate of Dallas trucker held in Mexico on ammunition smuggling delayed

Aug. 19, 2012 article: A decision is expected to be announced on Monday in the case of the Dallas trucker imprisoned in Mexico.

According to the Aletha Smith, the mother of truck driver Jabin Bogan, a Mexican magistrate made a decision on the trucker’s fate on Friday but the verdict won’t be announced until Monday.

Smith said the judge was presented with evidence showing her son crossed into Juarez after he was unable to make a u-turn at the bridge of the Americas.

She said he was instructed to cross the bridge and proceed into Juarez, turn around in Mexico, then proceed back to the U.S.

Bogan, 27, has maintained since the day of his arrest on April 17 that his GPS malfunctioned, directing him to Mexico. Mexican customs officials testified he was trying to turn and, when asked, showed paperwork showing the ammunition was destined for a wholesaler in Arizona.

Mexican customs officials and Bogan’s attorney both agree that Bogan never tried to conceal the load of 268,000 bullets inside his 18-wheeler.

His mother said it’s time for him to come home.

“Right now we don’t have a plan…we’ll take it from there,” she said.

One plan she is sure of is a trip to Las Vegas with her son if he does come home.

Mexican authorities have charged him with smuggling military ammunition, which carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
