Classroom Fund: Andress High calculus teacher wins $1,000 grant

After a week of suspense — and more than 73,000 votes later — the winner of a $1,000 grant from the El Paso Community Foundation’s Classroom Fund was announced Tuesday During ABC-7 News at 4.

She’s Andress High School calculus teacher Mary Mackay, one of three local teacher vying for the grant.

Each teacher had to submit a profile and explain how they would use the money in their classrooms. KVIA viewers then voted online for their favorite teacher.

There were more than 73,000 votes cast, and Mackay garnered more than 58 percent of the vote with 42,719.

In her request, Mackay said she wanted a scanner to provide more resources for her students; Adobe software that will allow her students to modify those documents; and more memory for her DropBox subscription.

The other teachers in the running were Erica Delgado, who teaches fourth-grade at North Star Elementary School, and Amy Raney, a theater teacher at Bill Sybert Middle School.

Delagado requested five Kindle Fire tablets to enhance interactive learning. Raney wanted to buy a P.A. system and microphones for her students.
