El Paso records the year’s first deadly West Nile case

A 77-year-old man has died as a result of West Nile virus, city health officials said Wednesday.

The City of El Paso Department of Public Health also confirms the number of people infected has grown to 13. Only two are women.

The patients’ ages range from 25 to 81.

“On behalf of the Department of Public Health, we offer our sincere condolences to the patient’s family and loved-ones. We continue to work hard at identifying cases of this disease and ask that the public listen to the warnings and take all precautions regarding West Nile virus so that we prevent more illness and loss of life,” said Public Health Director Michael Hill in a statement.
