Pedestrian dies in early morning traffic collision

A 71-year-old woman was killed Monday morning after she was struck by a vehicle as she was walking.

The El Paso Police Department’s preliminary investigation revealed Maria Araujo was crossing Delta in an unknown direction when she was struck by a 2001 Dodge Caravan driven by 51-year old Rosalia Ontiveros.

Investigators believe Ontiveros had already cleared the intersection of Delta and Buena Vista when she struck Araujo, who was not in the crosswalk.

Investigators do not believe speed or alcohol were factors in this collision. This is the 49th traffic fatality of 2012 compared to 67 during this same time period in 2011.
