Spencer Looking Forward to Fall

On September 22nd of last year in a game against the Wisconsin Badgers UTEP Defensive Back Richard Spencer thought his career with the Miners came to a sudden end when he tore his ACL in his left knee.

“It was kind of a fluke play in a sense,” UTEP Defensive Backs coach Gabe Franklin said. “It looked weird on film, but it just happens sometimes.”

“I heard the pop, and I knew something happened,” Richard Spencer explained. “My knee was already hurting and when I went down, but when we went in to the locker room turned out it was my ACL.”

From Camp Ranall Stadium to an operating table, Spencer never thought he would get to suit up again for the Miners, but that all changed this spring when the NCAA granted him an extra year of eligibility.

“I was happy when I found,” Spencer said. “I called my family and tweeted about it to everyone.”

This spring Spencer can only be a spectator on the sidelines. However, come the fall, Spencer hopes to get back on the field and be a leader for the UTEP defense.

After this mornings spring practice Spencer stated, “When I get on the field, I’ll be as good as last year if not better.”

In only four games last year Spencer had a total of 36 tackles, but now entering what will be his last year in Orange and blue, Spencer is hoping to lead a defense and help elevate the UTEP program before he jogs off the field one last time as a contributing member of the UTEP Miners.
