New Mexico St. Beats UTEP In Softball 7-1

The UTEP Softball team lost to I-10 rival New Mexico State, 7-1, on a cold, blistery night at NM State Softball Complex Tuesday night.

The Miners (2-4) found themselves down early to the Aggies (4-1) when Staci Rodriguez blasted a three-run shot over center field in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Kayla Black got UTEP on the board when she drove in freshman Kawehiokalani Netane on a fielder’s choice in the top of the second inning, but State would answer. Aggie catcher Alyssa Ruiz went deep on a two-run home run to left-center, giving her squad all the momentum.

Junior transfer Erika Arcuri continued her solid hitting at leadoff going 2-for-3 for the night, while Netane went 1-for-3 with a run scored.

The Miners will have two more opportunities to get back at the Aggies at the home opener at Helen of TroyField on Feb. 23 and 24.
