El Paso to adopt new district maps

City Council is scheduled to adopt a new map depicting the redrawn district boundaries Monday evening.

Under the Voting Rights Act, City Council must ensure each of the eight city districts have an equal number of people living within their bounds. The city is redrawing the lines based on the latest population figures from the 2010 Census. The city must submit the proposed maps to the U.S. Department of Justice for approval.

The most growth has occurred on the east side, or in districts 3, 5, 6 and 7. But the remaining districts will see changes, as well. The city has distributed neighborhoods to other districts so each one has 81,140 residents.

The city is scheduled to adopt a new map Monday at 6 p.m. during a special meeting.
