Interim Superintendent Terri Jordan steps down; Ken George to temporarily take over

At El Paso Independent School District’s board meeting Tuesday night, interim superintendent Terri Jordan stepped down.

She will be replaced temporarily by Ken George, who will take over for the next couple of weeks while the board looks for a new interim superintendent.

Jordan said she chose to step down from interim superintendent over the weekend due to personal reasons.

She said the position was taking away from her family. Jordan said she will return to her previous position as EPISD chief of staff.

“I love Terri Jordan; she’s a beautiful person, said parent Gary Gonzalez. “But she was under Dr. (Lorenzo) Garcia. These other teachers, they went ahead and did it to save their job.”

As chief of staff, Jordan was Garcia’s right-hand during the public corruption scandal that infested the district. Garcia pleaded guilty to federal charges earlier this year.

Bowie High Principal Dr. Jesus Chavez didn’t look the other way to keep his job. He was removed in April. Chavez is suing EPISD for removing him, a lawsuit board members postponed discussing. It’s not clear whether he’ll get his job back.

“We feel that it was time we show our support for Dr. Chavez,” said Bowie Instructor Mario Garcia. “We feel that these issues that have been brought about go beyond Dr. Chavez but that these troubles, these issues go far beyond.”

George has been appointed for the next couple of weeks and will be paid $75 per hour. When asked if he will resume the interim superintendent position beyond that, he said that is up the board.

George has 30 years experience and he previously served as interim superintendent for EPISD and Clint ISD.
