Pedestrian, train involved in collision that leaves 1 dead

A man is dead after being struck by a train in Socorro near the intersection of Middle Drain and Bauman Roads, officials said.

At this time, the area remains blocked off.

Socorro dispatchers learned of the crash around 3:30 a.m.

Officials said the engineer driving the train saw the man, but could not stop the train in time. The train was carrying 60 cars.

The momentum of the crash was so great that the man’s body was dragged roughly 300 feet, into San Elizario near Clint, officials said.

A second train will be needed to pull the train away from the intersection, according to officials.

Dave Garcia, a spokesperson for the city, said it is not known why the victim was on the tracks, or whether it was intentional or not.

It does not appear that anyone else was injured during the collision, officials said. The name of the man killed has not yet been released.

According to ABC-7’s archives the same area was the scene of another deadly collision not much more than a year ago.

A 14-year-old boy was crossing that same intersection when he was struck by a freight train.

According to family members, they believe he did not see the train coming.
