Teen who faked having cancer and created charity has been sentenced

Horizon 19-year-old Angie Gomez was sentenced Wednesday afternoon to two years in prison but the judge suspended that and sentenced her to five years probation in a plea deal.

If she breaks her probation she will be sentenced to two years in prison. Gomez had been charged with one felony charge of theft of property.

She also will have to go to theft counseling which she will have to pay for. She also must do 400 hours of community service, pay a $500 fine and pay $16,485 in restitution.

Gomez also is forbidden from fundraising.

The charge stemmed from allegations that she started a fake charity on the pretense that she had cancer, helping her raise more than $17,000.

In 2011, Gomez made headlines as a school collected money and put on a prom since she missed hers due to a hospital stay. Eventually those same students helped her raise money for the “Achieve the Dream Foundation,” which Gomez set up.

Horizon Police investigators have said they believe she lied about her leukemia to gain access to the money.
