Update: El Paso Police ID man shot by officer Sunday

Update: 32-year old Jorge Ivan Vasquez-Medrano of the 3900 block of N. Piedras has been identified as the man who was shot by a five-year veteran of the El Paso Police Department Sunday morning. Police did not identify the police officer.

Aug. 12, 2012 Story: A man is in critical but stable condition after being shot by an on-duty El Paso police officer Sunday morning, according to police.

In a release, police said that the man threatened the officer with a knife during a response to a domestic disturbance call. The call came in at 1:22 a.m.

The central patrol division officer responded to a house on the 3900 block of Piedras Street. Police said he was confronted by the man wielding a knife outside the home.

According to police, the officer commanded the man to drop his weapon, but the man refused and instead continued to threaten the officer.

In response, the officer shot the man, who was then transported to University Medical Center, according to the release.

The shooting is being investigated by the El Paso Police Department’s crimes against persons unit, crime scene unit, shooting review team and the Texas Rangers.

Charges are pending against the man, who is in his early 30s, police said. No one else was injured.

The officer involved in the shooting, a five-year veteran, will be placed on administrative duty during the investigation, police added. This is standard for officer-involved shootings.
