Man charged with allegedly pointing handgun at neighbors, Las Cruces Police say

A man believed to be upset that someone in his neighborhood was lighting fireworks during the early-morning hours of July 4 has been charged with allegedly pointing a handgun at two adults and a young child, according to Las Cruces Police officials.

Lincoln Simmons, 37, of 850 block of Holly Dr., was charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one count of negligent use of a deadly weapon.

At around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, Las Cruces Police were called to the mobile home park at 850 Holly Dr. where witnesses said Simmons threatened them with a handgun. Simmons was found in his home and taken into custody without incident. A 9 mm handgun was found in Simmons’ home.

According to police, two adult men and a 10-year-old girl were standing outdoors watching a fireworks display in their neighborhood when Simmons allegedly approached and pointed a handgun at them, threatening to shoot them if anymore fireworks were lighted.

No shots were fired and Simmons returned home.

Simmons was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $40,000.
