Some designated fireworks pop zones now clean, others not so much

Fireworks were banned throughout much of El Paso County due to dry conditions and fears of igniting fires. There were, however, a few areas where people could go to light fireworks. Among them were several parks in Socorro.

In spite of people lighting fireworks in the park less than a day ago, Rio Vista Park, which was one of the few designated popping areas, was relatively clean. The only traces of the fireworks were used wrappers that littered the ground and a sign that said, conspicuously, that fire works were allowed in the park.

One factor that may have contributed to the low amount of trash in the parks was the fact that numerous large-scale, sanctioned fireworks shows took place and served as an alternative to people lighting their own fireworks. Shows took place at Cohen Stadium, Speaking Rock and other locations throughout the county.

When asked if there were major problems in Montana Vista, an area that has been known for people setting off fireworks, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Department said that it was still compiling the number of citations given. However, the spokeswoman said that she did not know of any major incidents.
