Weather Blog: When will the heat end?

The borderland is no stranger to warm temperatures, but when will the area see a break from the heat? I often get this question from viewers who are tired of spending their afternoons trying to escape the sweltering temperatures.

While it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when the area will begin to see a drop in temperatures, we can make some judgements based on the borderlands typical weather patterns.

Typically, El Paso sees its hottest weather at the end of June with the average monthly high temperature topping out at 96.5.

As you can see below, the average high recorded at the El Paso International Airport for the month of June in 2012 was 100, 3.5 above average.

Even though we’ve been seeing unseasonably warm weather so far this summer, the good news is after we hit our peak temperatures in late June and early July, the temperatures do begin to come down… but not by much. The average high in August is still a sweltering 93.5.

So while the past few weeks have been nearly intolerable for anyone who has to spend extensive time outdoors in the afternoon, be comforted by the fact that we are at the hottest time of the year and July should be *slightly* cooler.

Now whether Mother Nature decides to follow the climatological norm or just keeps turning up the heat… that’s still up in the air.
