Noose hung from tree outside of Northeast El Paso home
A noose was hung from a tree in the front yard of a home in Northeast El Paso earlier this week.
The knotted rope was strung for neighbors to see — and though everyone has a theory on who may have been the culprit, nobody can seem to agree.
“I mean, who even knows how to tie these things, anyway,” said Brynn Moreno who took the rope down Tuesday morning.
Moreno says she lived with her parents at the home where the rope was strung until recently. Moreno’s daughter is biracial and Moreno’s fiancee is black.
“We’re the only interracial couple on the block, and so with it being black history month and everything on top of it, it’s painful,” Moreno said.
Neighbors living near the home said they had no idea what many consider a form of racial intimidation may have occurred. Moreno says she is frightened for her three-year-old daughter’s safety. She says not know whether or not it was a prank or a hate crime has her scared.
Moreno did not report the incident to police. She said she did not think police would be responsive if a complaint was made.
ABC-7 went to the home after receiving an e-mail tip from a viewer stating the noose was continuing to hang outside the home. Photographs of the hanging noose were attached to the e-mail.
Texas ranks third in the country for the most number of people killed by lynch mobs. From 1885-1942, 468 people were lynched, 339 of them were black.
