Woman Charged with Murder following Saturday Morning Stabbing
Las Cruces Police have arrested a woman suspected of a Saturday morning stabbing that resulted in the death of 22-year-old Delia Vasquez.
Jacklyne P. Legarreta, 23, of the 1800 block of Seldon Avenue , was arrested shortly after the incident and is now charged with an open count of murder and tampering with evidence.
Sometime after 1 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, Las Cruces Police were called to 406 Vassar Ct. where Vasquez had been stabbed in her chest. Vasquez was initially transported to Memorial Medical Center and then flown to University Medical Center of El Paso where she died on Sunday.
Las Cruces Police detectives learned that Vasquez was at the apartment attending a party when Legarreta arrived and started accusing another woman of looking at her boyfriend. An argument between Legarreta and the other woman escalated and turned physical just outside the apartment.
Vasquez separated the two women but Legarreta then began fighting with her. At some point during the fight between Legarreta and Vasquez, Legarreta used a knife to stab Vasquez in the chest.
Friends helped Vasquez into a vehicle and began driving her to the hospital while Legarreta remained at the apartment and tried to clean herself. Officers located Legarreta at the apartment and took her into custody.
Legarreta is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center with a cash-only bond set at $250,000.
