Estela Casas’ Son Making Name For Himself In Football

Finishing a football season 9-1 isn’t an easy task, but the number one ranked high school football team in El Paso, the Franklin Cougars are headed to the playoffs once again and looking to go on a playoff run led by senior wide receiver, Marcos Hernandez.

Hernandez, who is the son of KVIA’s very own Estela Casa’s, has been on a tear this season, gaining over 1,500 all-purpose yards. Playing not only as a wide receiver, Marcos also plays running back, kickoff returner and punt returner. He has scored 20 touchdowns overall this season and rightfully so winning a prestigious award given weekly to the most outstanding high school football player in Texas, The Build Ford Tough High School Player of the Week.

“It’s surreal because that’s my son.” Casas’ said.

Hernandez was honored with the award after his five touchdown, 352-yard performance against co-district champs, Americas High School.

Marcos knows his off the field priorities should be the same or if not better than his on the field success. Bringing home his mother good grades and having good character, “it just fills me with pride. Not just that he scores touchdowns. It’s because he’s’ a good kid.” said Estela.

Soft spoken, Marcos doesn’t like talking about his individual success rather than the overall team success. “He’s a simple young man. He’s humble.” Casas’ said. The Cougars got a share of the 5-A District title, with their only loss coming against rival, Montwood. Marcos had two touchdowns in that game. The Cougars offense was one of the city’s best, averaging 42 points a game while only surrendering 16 points.

Playing football since an early age, Marcos doesn’t want his playing career to end this season. He is looking to play and go to school at a Division II college. “I’d like to keep going to college to play and keep the legacy going.” Hernandez said.

Estela couldn’t be more proud.
