City records 18th flu-related death this season
An elderly man has become the city’s latest flu-related death, bringing the total number this season to 18.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to this man’s family and friends. We extend our condolences to all those who have lost loved ones as we continue to work diligently to help prevent more loss of life in our community,” said Fernando Gonzalez, Lead Epidemiologist.
Health Department officials say that the number of new flu cases continues to decline. During the past week a total of 79 cases were reported. A total of 3,852 cases of influenza have been reported this flu season.
Officials continue to urge residents to practice prevention including the 4 C’s:
CLEAN-Wash your hands often. Scrub your hands for at least 30 seconds with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.
COVER-Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Don’t have a tissue? The crook of your elbow will do.
CONTAIN-Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you do get sick, stay home until you’re well again, so you don’t spread more germs.
CALL-Call or see your doctor if you or your child has a fever of greater than 100 degrees.
