Only on ABC-7: ’50 to 1′ film debuts in Albuquerque

The story of Mine That Bird” will be told on the big screen.

The New Mexico based horse raced in Ruidoso and Sunland Park but its place in horse racing history was secured when it finished first in the Kentucky Derby in 2009.

“50 to 1” is premiering tonight in Albuquerque and ABC-7 is there to cover it.

“Horse racing is a great thing and the little guy’s got a shot just like anybody else,” Leonard Blach, one of the owners of Mine That Bird, told ABC-7 Wednesday. “I think it shows the underdog has a chance – always.”

The film is named for his odds of winning at Churchill Downs.

The cast and filmmakers are about to start promoting the flick on a cross-country tour Mine That Bird will make appearances along the way.

Sounds reminiscent of the 1,500 mile trek the horse and its trainer made in 2009 from the Borderland to Kentucky in a pickup and trailer.

The movie’s directed by the Oscar-winning producer of “Dances with Wolves.”

“50 to 1” opens in El Paso on April 4.

Article will be updated throughout the night.
