DPS won’t disclose details of new border spending

State officials won’t reveal exactly how an extra $1.3 million a week in border security funding authorized by Gov. Rick Perry will be spent.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger said Thursday that details of ramped-up patrols along the Texas-Mexico border for the rest of the year are being withheld because of “operational security and law enforcement safety.”

Perry and other top-ranking Republicans approved additional spending late Wednesday to fight what they described as a flood of illegal immigration.

Thousands of unaccompanied minors mostly from Central America – estimated at more than 47,000 so far this budget year – have been entering the United States in recent months and overwhelmed the federal government.

Vinger said the additional funding will target violent crime and human trafficking.
