USA ties Portugal 2-2 in FIFA World Cup
It was a 2-2 tie with Portugal and hundreds of El Pasoans watched the second USA game in the FIFA World Cup Sunday.
Soccer fever is running high in the Borderland.
“It is a soccer town. Just give El Paso a test, a nice match, and people will come,” one fan inside Corner Tavern and Grill said.
Red, white and blue packed the establishment before, during and after the game. Fans all had their own reason for cheering on team USA.
“My family watches all the preliminary games and year-round games and once it’s World Cup season it’s like a holiday for us, and nonstop celebrating for the entire month of the cup,” one woman said.
The excitement of the cup is fueling the fire for fans who desire bringing a Major League Soccer team and stadium to El Paso. Their dream may soon come true.
To for sure move on in the cup, team USA must either beat or tie Germany. That match up is set for Thursday, June 26.
MountainStar Sports Group, the organization that owns the El Paso Chihuahuas, mentioned last week that they’d like to bring MLS here to El Paso. People ABC-7 spoke with on Sunday say it’s certainly time.
