Sgt. Dwight W. Burn, 27, of Barstow, Calif. died of injuries sustained when
a CH-47 Chinook helicopter crashed Saturday night in Fort Bliss’ northern training area near Orogrande, New Mexico, according to the Army.
The other three crew members on board were injured and are currently in stable condition with two of them expected to be released from the hospital within the next 24 hours, according to an Army news release.
The third soldier will remain hospitalized for an unspecified time period for
medical observation while he recovers.
Due to privacy requests from the surviving soldiers and their families, their names, injuries and locations will not be released at this time.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing with teams from the 82nd
Airborne Division and the U.S. Army Readiness/Safety Center in the lead with
assistance provided by Fort Bliss officials.
A timeline for completing the investigation has not been established but similar investigations have taken up to six months to complete.
The unit was conducting High Altitude Mountainous Environment Training at
Fort Bliss, Texas at the time of the crash at about 8:15 p.m. Saturday.
This training is required in order to prepare 82nd CAB Aviators to deploy anytime, to any environment in support of the Global Response Force and other missions, as there are unique challenges to aircraft and aircrews posed by a mountainous environment.
