City proclaims Sun Bowl Week for upcoming events
Kickoff of the 81st Hyndai Sun Bowl is only 11 days away, and a lot of events are happening until then to prepare for the matchup.
City council Tuesday declared Sun Bowl Week in recognition of the community impact and all the events leading up to the game itself.
There have been a number of events going on already, with some of the biggest yet to come. They’re sure to give fans plenty to do ahead of the game between the Duke Blue Devils and the Arizona State Sun Devils.
The Sun Bowl Invitational Basketball Tournament begins Dec. 21, featuring Kent State, North Dakota State, and Alcorn State. The Sun Bowl Golf Challenge will pit teams from Arizona State and Duke against each other the day before the game. And the Fan Fiesta will offer free events and entertainment to everyone the night before kickoff.
And then of course, there’s the Sun Bowl game itself, kicking off at high noon on Dec. 27. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com, starting at $22 dollars.
Sun Bowl Association executive director Bernie Olivas was at council Tuesday morning to accept the proclamation.
“Oh you know what,” Olivas said. “It’s just recognizing the efforts of hundreds of volunteers that help us put on not only the Sun Bowl football game, but our entire events. There are very few people, but it’s a volunteer run organization. And it kind of recognizes all of the efforts that all of our volunteers put out throughout the year.”
The Sun Bowl website has a list of all the events going on leading up to the game. You can also give a shout out to Arizona State or Duke on our Facebook page. We’ll have some of them on air as well.
