Reies Lopez Tijerina dies
Reies Lopez Tijerina, a Chicano activist, who lead an uprising in New Mexico in the late 60’s died today in El Paso of natural causes, he was 88 yrs old
Lopez Tijeria led a struggle in the 1960s and 1970s to restore New Mexican land grants to the descendants of Spanish and Mexican owners. He was a very vocal spokesman for the rights of Hispanics and Mexican Americans.
He became famous internationally when in 1967 , lead a group of armed men on a raid on the Tierra Amarilla courthouse in New Mexico.
