El Pasoan helps football players receive scholarships

El Pasoan Javier Loya is a Burges High School graduate and now a minority owner of the Houston Texans.

Back as a senior in high school, Loya was not recruited to play college football and since then he wanted to make a difference.

“I am doing this because I was one of those kids,” Loya said. “As a high school senior here at Burges I was not recruited. I’ve seen a lot of El Paso kids that I know can compete at that elite level.”

Over the past several years, Loya has worked with the high school football All-Star game folks in El Paso to get Division 2 coaches to come to the Borderland to offer scholarships to El Paso football players.

In the past, only a handful of coaches would travel out to the game, but with Loya’s help paying for coaches to travel to the game; they have been able to draw dozens of coaches the past few years

Loya said around $6 million have been offered in academic scholarships. Loya said to be eligible, a player must have taken the ACT or SAT, have a GPA and have a class rank.

The Greater El Paso Showcase Combine is on Friday, Dec. 19 at the Soccoro Student Activites Complex.
