Officials: Doa Ana County Jail inmate overdoses on heroin

An inmate at the Dona Aa County Detention in Las Cruces is in critical condition after a possible heroin overdose, officials said.

Guards found the unidentified 28-year-old man unconscious in a booking cell in the facility. The inmate was unresponsive and his skin was bluish-gray in color, officials with the Detention Center told ABC-7.

During hospital treatment, medical personnel discovered a baggie containing what is believed to be heroin packed inside the man’s anal cavity. The baggie is believed to have leaked an overdose of the drug into the man’s system.

He was being held on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court.
