Attorney Stuart Leeds found guilty of contempt of court
El Paso attorney Stuart Leeds was found guilty Wednesday afternoon of contempt of court in a hearing.
He is already on probation with the state bar, and now faces the possibility of up to 30 days in jail. Judge Sam Medrano allowed Leeds to be released on a personal recognizance bond.
This case began in 2009 when prosecutors say Leeds improperly filed a motion in a capital murder case. They said he did that to delay the trial. Leeds is being defended by his colleague Theresa Caballero.
She argued Leeds simply made a mistake and attempted to correct the record later. But the prosecution argued Leeds lied through his actions.
Caballero called nearly a dozen witnesses to testify Leeds is honest and hard working.
