Moe’s Restaurant closes after 61 years

After 61 years, Moe’s Restaurant closed its doors Sunday. It was a bittersweet day for the owners and loyal customers.

The warm restaurant first opened its doors in 1953. The business has been welcoming people and families from all over the borderland ever since.

“I was born in 1952, in 1953, they opened up this place. Three years later I was sitting here in a high chair in here with my parents,” loyal customer Ed Pion, said.

After being open for more than five decades, the owners, Bonnie Dominguez and her husband, decided to close the family business after several health scares. Both were diagnosed with cancer and have since recovered. Now, they simply want to enjoy life.

“Tomorrow I plan on resting all day. And then we’ll be putting the business up for sale,” Dominguez said.

During the 61 years Moe’s was opened, customers became instant friends.

“We associate this place with us, with my family,” Pion said.

There’s no denying those savory dishes will be missed, though.

“Mexican combo plate number #1, because it has good tamales, tacos and enchiladas,” one customer said.

For the food, for the environment and for the hospitality, customers raise their glasses one last time and toast in appreciation for some of the fondest memories.

“Cheers to you Bonnie and Moe’s we thank you very much for everything,” one customer said.

“I’m going to miss them dearly,” Dominguez said.
