New vouchers offer support to homeless veterans
Homeless veterans can be found across the country and here in the Borderland. But getting them help to improve their situation can often be difficult.
Many veterans face mental and physical issues that can make everyday life difficult. But there is help at all stages, even for those out on the street.
Glenn Longmire served in the Marine Corps from 1974 to 1978. He had a job, family and home, but ran into financial difficulty after losing the job.
El Paso’s Housing Authority recently secured an additional 34 housing voucher slots that were going unused elsewhere. That brings the total to 204 spots available for homeless veterans and their families in our area.
But Longmire said it can be difficult for veterans to accept help.
“You know, it’s pride,” Longmire said. “A lot of it, you know. And you can swallow a lot of pride when you’re not the only one that’s going to suffer from your decision. You know, I could not let my wife suffer, you know, because of my inability to ask for help.”
Longmire is now in housing, receiving the support and assistance that goes along with it. He’s attending El Paso Community College studying psychology. He hopes to become a counselor, to help other veterans in need.
If you are or know a veteran in need of housing assistance, you can learn more about programs and contact the Housing Authority on its website.
