YISD students missing transcripts; staff worried about out-sourcing

The school board meeting at Ylseta Independent School District was packed Wednesday with parents and staff who were worried over a couple issues at the district.

A handful of Ysleta seniors found out the colleges and scholarships they applied to hadn’t received their midyear reports and transcripts on time and they panicked.

“Anybody who works with students especially those that are going to college understand that midyear reports have to get to colleges in January and some are due in early February,” said scholarship advisor Liza Montelongo. “We’re already into March so for a lot of our kids, that means a lost opportunity for them.”

Central office addressed her concern. They said they are conducting a manual audit of the system to make sure the transcripts have all the necessary information and are sent out. They will handle lost transcripts on a case by case basis. Another issue was brought forward by the YISD Teacher Assn.

Based on a $100,000 study commissioned by Superintendent Michael Zolkowski, they believed he was going to out-source the operations department. Zolkowski said he is not out-sourcing anyone’s job and in the four years he’s been at the district he’s never laid off any employee. He said he wanted the study to see if new employees and equipment were needed.
