Bond Reduced for Fort Bliss Soldier Accused of Beating Constable to Death

The bond for the Fort Bliss soldier accused of beating an El Paso County Constable to death has been reduced from $5 million to $30,000, according to jail records.

Devond Huerta-Person, 19, remains jailed on a Capital Murder charge for the death of Constable Robert White.

According to investigators, Huerta-Person got into an argument with White outside a haunted house in Canutillo. White was working as a security guard Halloween Night 2014.

The soldier punched White in the face, causing him to fall down and hit his head on the ground, investigators said. White lost consciousness and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

A woman who witnessed the incident told ABC-7 Huerta-Person hit the constable while he was down.

“The constable (wasn’t looking) when he got sucker punched across the face with a very horrible uppercut, a Mike Tyson sucker punch,” the woman said. “(The constable) fell down. He tried to get up when the individual hit him right on the nose full blast and was laughing.”

The ABC-7 I-Team obtained a copy of White’s autopsy report. It states White had hypertension and hear disease, but a man punching him in the face played a significant role in his death.

The witness said the defense should not use White’s underlying medical conditions as an excuse. “(He did not die) because he was overweight or because he had high blood pressure. We all have medical problems,” the woman said. “No, he died because he was sucker punched.”

ABC-7 wants to know why the bond was reduced. Messages were left with Huerta-Person’s defense attorney, Dolph Quijano Jr.; Claudia Duran, with the district attorney’s office; and the office of Judge Luis Aguilar.

They have yet to respond.
